Amsterdam and what I ate

Hey there!

Linking up with What I Ate Wednesday today, since I got some delicious weekend eats to share, plus a recap of my weekend in Amsterdam.

A big thank you to our hostess Jen from Peas and Crayons!!

A big thank you to our hostess Jen from Peas and Crayons!!

So, I accompanied one of our athletes who is a CrossFit athlete and coach, but mainly focus on Karate. There was a competition on Sunday in Almere (30minutes from Amsterdam) and we spent three days in the city. A little too relaxed with our timing, we almost missed the flight – just arriving at the gate when the lady was about to call out our names. Some looks of reproach from all the passengers, but oh well, we made it.

Saturday we arrived early, checked in the hotel and later in the afternoon, Radovan met up with his athlete friends and I went for a 4 hours stroll through the city to do some photographing.

Seriously, there is hardly anything which relaxes me more than being in a complete foreign place, totally on my own, without any time pressure and with my camera. It’s pure bliss for me and I felt completely chilled and happy.

I haven’t been drinking a lot the last few weeks – actually hardly anything – and was supertipsy after this ridiculous small bottle. Nothing wrong with walking around on my own with a stupid grin on ma face.

Since I am the creator of clumsiness, I am pleasantly surprised, that I didn’t get lost at all on my 4 hours odyssey through Amsterdam. Especially when being lost in searching for photo themes and staring at joints as big as my head. Don’t worry, I didn’t go on that high.

Later in the evening, I was perfectly knocked out and frozen up til down to my underwear, so the only solution to get on to some food was Take Away. Caesar Salad, Sushi and Movie – nothing to complain here.

The view from the hotelroom wasn't too bad either....

Sunday morning we headed off to the sportshall in Almere for the competition. Let’s just say that the drive there was kind of ….interesting? The taxi drivers had no freaking CLUE as to where the hell we want to go (I really don’t get this, it’s quite easy – and we all know that this coming from me, must mean something). I was sitting in the back trying to find an address on the phone, while Radovan was arguing with the turkish taxi driver. His Serbian blood started boiling a little and I was just a tiny bit concerned that I would need to set in my biceps in any case. All was good in the end and we arrived on time….. πŸ™‚

I loved to see this, I have never seen Karate before and I was amazed.

I swear he didn't smoke or drink.

I swear he didn’t smoke or drink. Well. Maybe, on the second glance, I am not so sure anymore.

Unfortunately Radovan was out after the first round. It was disappointing, but it wasn’t too much of a surprise – he is actually recovering from being injured since 3,5 months (broken toe and injured medial collateral ligament) and was indeed limited in his training. Nevertheless, it was great to be there and watch the fights and experiencing the atmosphere of such a tournament and seeing him perform.

Amsterdam Amsterdam When getting back to town we celebrated with All you can Eat -Style Sushi. Believe me, I ate Radovan’s weight in Sushi – he is not by any means a light weight currently. I care to admit that I was in shortage of breath after about 68 plates of Sushi. I don’t even know how my stomach was able to carry all this. I may mention, that the only movement I did that day was running to catch the train when we left the sportshall. I felt full but well, every single of these rolls (balls? hahaha. RHIIIME! ) was worth it.

Amsterdam It was an early dinner, which resulted in ordering Pizza at 2 am in the morning after drinks at the hotel bar. Guys – this is called balance and that makes me a Healthy Living Blogger. I SWEAR.

Monday morning I went for a Interval Cardio Session at the hotel gym and Radovan went out for a run. Fuel was needed, cause well, I may or may not have had enough food the night before (WTF?! WHere did it all go??). A little concerned about our Sushi-Pizza-Galore the night before, we chose a smart breakfast:

Omelette with mushrooms and ham, Cheese and veggies - unpictured yogurt and fruit on the side

We walked around for the rest of the day, enjoying the fabulous weather and another clean lunch. Plus, I had to spend a serious amount of time at a Whole Foods market. I am thinking about moving in to one, one day.

Hilariousness was the mood most of the time during this weekend. My taste.

Not so my taste this absolutely HUMONGOUS pastries?! Well , we stood there for a while, trying to imagine how we would feel after a portion like that and decided it wasn’t for us.

But well, Sushi it was. AGAIN. All you can eat. All out. Breathless. DAMN. So good!! I am almost sure I heard my belly whimpering a little.

3 days without any killer WODS and loads of food but not too much sugar or alcohol resulted in a day full of PR’s at the box. Morning Training with the Coaches I was able to absolve the WOD’s faster than usual, Olympic Lifting 50kg Clean and Jerk (I know it’s not a lot but for me it’s big), and 6×6 straight gymnastics pull ups. A good day.

My enlightement AGAIN: Workout hard, but eat and rest just as. I will try to GLUE this into my brain as I try to do since years. Maybe this time it actually remains there.

Now head over to our hostess and check out more foodspiration!!

Have you ever been to the Netherlands?

Ever seen a Karate fight?

Are you a fan like me of Sushi (and Corona beer?)

Thanx so much for capturing all the elements in your photos!! Love sushi but don’t have much opportunities for it out here in the middle of North America. So we are good about rolling our leftovers and calling it frig-out-dinner-rolls. Keep Traveling & Shooting Photos

  2. So much deliciousness- jealous of all that sushi! I’m a huge fan of the stuff but I’ll pass on the beer…more of a vodka drinker :)! Amsterdam looks like a blast to visit! I’ve never been to the Netherlands but I’ve made a personal mission to see more of Europe over the next few years!

  3. Cat (CFIGFY) says:

So… much… SUSHI! I’m actually going to Amsterdam in 6 weeks and cannot wait! I can totally see myself finding the Whole Foods and spending far too long in there too πŸ˜‰

  4. letizia@thefitlabel says:

So much good food!! I LOVE sushi and the last time I had “all you can eat” sushi was at Sumo in Amsterdam!! It was delicious and cheaper than in Switzerland. I am not a fan of beer though! I prefer a mojito, or a spritz πŸ˜‰

  5. I need to tell you my Netherlands story. At the airport. Worst 3 hours of my life.

Also, that hall looks so familiar- my friend is (was) a gymnast and she competed there a few years ago (I think!).

Pizza at 2am? Nice one. Guaranteed PR’s.

  6. Emily Hawkes says:

Wow, wandering around an unknown place on my own would give me the fear, rather than make me relaxed πŸ™‚ You took some lovely photos! And the food looks fab!

  7. Wow what a cool trip! I love how you just went for it and had a great time exploring! All my love xo C

  8. I love Amsterdam! Especially just wondering around checking out all the street art… The best city to not have a plan and simply wonder!
All you can eat sushi, wow, that looks incredible – total heaven!
I often find when I have a few days of complete rest, relaxation and happiness and then go back to the box, I PR to the max! It’s so hard to ‘allow yourself’ to take time out and rest but sometimes it’s exactly what we need!

  9. danielle says:

wow your photos are seriously spectacular!!! what camera are you using? love them all… you are gifted in SO many areas in life lol. love it!
okay so Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities ever. i just went last september for a long weekend and had the time of my life. i met up with a triathlon friend who showed us all the cool things to do, and we did tons of walking, eating, and drinking.. maybe some smoking don’t tell. lol. i felt like i could actually live there. maybe i just had a good experience and got lucky but seriously loved it.
i actually practiced martial arts (tae kwon do and karate and kung fu) for several years from 13-20. it was amazingly fun to me, and have so many great memories. i love watching live matches and fights!
so happy you got to experience all of that awesomeness, i felt like i was there with you and of course wish i was πŸ™‚
and yes to all the sushi!!! and sashimi πŸ™‚ love you xoxoxo

    • Oh you did?? That’s so cool! I wish I got to know this sport earlier.
And thanks! I use a canon with a special objective that is perfect for good shots but not too easy to handle actually. But I love it!

I love those first pics you took! You should get some of these printed and framed!

Sushi. All the sushi. But really I’m fascinated by Whole Foods. I had no idea there was one in Amsterdam!!!

    • They actually got featured On Netherlands Tourism 😊 pretty cool!

It wasn’t THE Whole Foods unfortunately, just any one but good enough for me to stay for a good while πŸ˜„πŸ˜„

  11. cottercrunch says:

i so agree! a foreign place is the best place to be and relax! on my way to NZ now to meet up with the husband. Wanna come?

  12. Aw this looks amazing! I totally need to get myself to Amsterdam. There’s something so special about wandering free in a new city isn’t there? Magical πŸ™‚
Nice C&J too girl! In reply to your question the other day no I haven’t entered the open 😦 I haven’t been training much lately mainly due to being constantly exhausted and ill since Christmas (it’s getting a bit ridiculous, headed to the docs soon but it’s taking forever to get an appointment) so hopefully next year!

  13. I love looking through your pictures. You manage to capture beauty in unusual places. You’re really good at it.

Also, great advice on the rest days. It does make a world of difference. #vanillagorillas take rest days all the time. At least this one does. πŸ™‚
